Fleur Narcotique by Ex Nihilo — Full Review: The Fruity Floral Done Right

· Jason Cardenas

Bright and mouthwatering without the cloying sweetness

I've been circling Fleur Narcotique for a while now. It comes up in nearly every "best niche floral" conversation, usually in the same breath as Parfums de Marly's Valaya — same perfumer, similar DNA — and the hype is loud enough that I had to find out whether it actually earns it. After wearing it, reading through dozens of wearer reviews, and sitting with it across different days, here's my honest take.

The Overall Scent

The first spray is a rush of juicy fruit — ripe peach and lychee over a creamy, almost sparkling bergamot. It's bright and mouthwatering but stops well short of syrupy; there's a freshness holding the whole thing up. Then the florals arrive: heady jasmine front and center, backed by peony and orange blossom. This is a jasmine-forward fragrance, no question — but it's the friendly kind of jasmine, luminous and clean rather than heavy or indolic.

What keeps impressing me is the balance. Sweet but not sweet. Floral but never powdery or old-fashioned. Fresh but with real depth underneath. The drydown settles into white musk and pale woods with a whisper of ambroxan — soft, slightly powdery, and quietly persistent. The jasmine lingers longest, which I love.

On paper the notes read feminine, but on skin this wears far more unisex than you'd expect. It's polished and confident rather than pretty-pretty — the kind of scent that smells expensive without trying to announce itself.

Performance

For a fruity floral — a category notorious for fading by lunch — the performance here is genuinely impressive. I get a solid six-plus hours on skin, and plenty of wearers report it lasting all day, even longer on clothes. There's also an Extrait version that turns everything up a notch if you want more. This is not a fragrance you'll be reapplying at noon.

Sillage

This is where Fleur Narcotique quietly shines. The projection is gorgeous — it creates a beautiful scented aura around you without ever becoming loud or sharp. It fills the space you're in. People notice it, and the compliment rate on this one is famously high. It announces you; it doesn't assault anyone. Big, but refined.

Occasion

Here's the thing: this might be one of the most versatile niche florals I know. Daytime office? Absolutely — it's clean and polished. Dinner or brunch? Perfect — elegant and confident. Date night? The juicy-floral warmth handles that easily. Plenty of people wear it year-round, and I get why, though it truly sings in spring and summer. One reviewer called it "summer in a bottle," and that's exactly right. If I had to pick one lane, it's a warm-weather signature with no real off-season.

The Verdict

Fleur Narcotique earns the hype. It's a masterclass in balance — juicy but fresh, floral but modern, powerful but refined. If you love jasmine, or you're hunting for a fruity floral that doesn't smell like every other fruity floral, this deserves a spot on your test list. Try it on skin before you judge it — it's better in the air than it is on paper.
